File Sharing - Distance?

This might be a very difficult or a very stupid question, nevertheless I've read where the only stupid question is one not asked, so here goes...

I've got a MacBook Pro (that I use for work) and an iMac at home. Occasionally I'll travel and I've only recently discovered file sharing between my two Macs. It's very handy and works like a charm on my home network. But let's say I'm on the road in Seattle with my MBP and my iMac is, obviously, at home in Miami. Am I still able to access any files on my iMac from my MBP while not on the home network? If so, what are those settings exactly?

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

It's possible, but a hassle to set up.

Questions:

-- Does you isp permit file transfer to and from the internet.

-- You need the ability to find you home computer. Look at dynamic ip address.

-- might need to configure you router to allow file transfer.

-- need to let your home computer running 24/7.

The biggest problem is security. Openning up your network open you up to all sorts of hackers.

A better approach would be to get dropbox.com or similar. Do you have a small set of files to share?
